(Using CLB Speaking Exemplar Benchmark 3) 

Interviewer (I): How are you today?
Student (S): OK. I’m OK.
I: What country are you from? 
S: I am from is Russia. 
C (corrections): You are from Russia?  (repeat with question, emphasizing error)
S: I am from Russia. 
I: Tell me about Russia?
S: Russia very big country. This country glive very nice peoples (people). In Russia very great culture. I have many friends in my country. My son too. 
C: In English we say: Russia has very nice people. Russia has great culture. (correct it and move on)
I: How long have you been in Canada?
S: I am in Canada 9 months. 
C: Ignore correction for fluency. 
I: What do you do here in Canada? 
S: Now I’m study English. This week I go to class and I go (went) to library, study English. I went to shopping (shop).
C: Did you went shopping or  Did you go shopping?  (identify error and elicit correction)
I: What do you do on the weekend? 
S: This weekend? This weekend I climbing, rock climbing. 
I: Tell me about your apartment. 
S: My apartment very nice apartment. Building very clean and quiet. Maybe small rooms. My apartment didn’t have balcony. But clean.  Nice place with ???  It is nice place my building, my apartment.
I: What do you think about Canadian weather? 
S: Canadian weather like in south Russia(?).  Is like south….
I: What’s your favorite season? 
S: Summer. 
I: Why? 
S: Because I like mountaineering, rock climbing and I like travel. 

C: Make note of failure to use verbs (to be and to go) and explain using examples at end of conversation to maintain some fluency in the conversation.
